There’s no doubt that the RCZ R is a very attractive car. Streamlined with that distinctive double bubble roof, it turns heads.<br />
<br />
Based on the “standard” RCZ but given a serious makeover by Peugeot’s specialist motorsports arm, Peugeot Sport, the R has a more aggressive look, thanks to a lowered ride height, rear spoiler, side skirts and bigger 19-inch wheels.<br />
<br />
Peugeot RCZ RMore importantly, the 200bhp 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine has been tuned to produce an impressive 267bhp.<br />
<br />
On paper it’s capable of an impressive (restricted) 155mph and can reach 62mph in 5.9 seconds.<br />
<br />
Anyway, despite all that extra turbocharged power, the RCZ R is more frugal and greener than the RCZ with 44.8mpg possible and C02 emissions of 145 g/km – an improvement of 10g/km.<br />
<br />

<br />
Open the large driver’s door, slip into the cockpit and it all feels good – at first. The red-stitched sports seats have plenty of adjustment, but the steering wheel only adjusts for rake, not reach.<br />
<br />
Try as I might, I couldn’t find the perfect driving position, which is a shame because the seats are comfortable, while the dashboard and centre console look the part with large dials. I especially liked the distinctive analogue clock in the middle of the centre console, while the 7-inch multimedia screen magically pops up above the clock and air vents giving you access to audio, sat nav, hand-free phone etc.<br />
<br />
However, you need exceptionally long arms to reach the centre console and touchscreen which means you’re forever reaching forward with your left arm.<br />
<br />
PEUGEOT RCZ R<br />
<br />
Press the start button and the potent engine fires up, emitting a suitably sporty baritonal rasp.<br />
<br />
Pull away and the power is immediately obvious. It’s also clear that there’s something very clever going on because, thanks to a limited slip differential system and big tyres. there’s a lot of grip up front.<br />
<br />
Mated to a slick 6-speed manual gearbox, the RCZ R offers a sporty, fun drive without being scarily quick. However, it’s deceptive and you can hit the legal speed limit faster than you think, so beware.<br />
<br />
Peugeot RCZ R<br />
<br />
It corners well with minimum body lean, though some may find the ride a tad on the hard side, especially on rougher road surfaces.<br />
<br />
On longer journeys that sporty exhaust note becomes more of a persistent boom, which may not be to everyone’s taste either.<br />
<br />
Even though it’s technically a 2+2, very small children would struggle to fit in the rear. That said, it’s the same story on the much newer Audi TT, so par for the course. On the plus side, the boot is big, if a little shallow, and it’s even more impressive if you fold the rear seats down.<br />
<br />
Peugeot RCZ RThe RCZ feels safe – the brakes are excellent, it’s solidly built and it’s equipped with dynamic stability control, plus Electronic Brake Force Distribution, Emergency Brake Assist and Intelligent Traction Control – a hi-tech anti-skid system.<br />
<br />
I may well have been able to get close to the claimed 44.4mpg if I hadn’t been enjoying myself so much at the wheel, despite my issues, but I’d say 30-35mpg is more real world (still impressive given the amount of power on tap).<br />
<br />
So if you’re looking for a distinctive fun, fast coupe with a touch of French flair, the RCZR could be for you. If you do go for it, opt for Moroccan Red – a rich colour that gives the car even more kerb appeal – if that’s possible.<br />
<br />
In terms of looks, it’s most obvious rival is the Audi TT, but there’s also the VW Scirocco, Nissan 370Z and Toyota GT86. As for price? The Peugeot RCZ R costs from £32,250.

READ IT! Porsche doesn’t make yoga pants. At least not yet. What it does make is the Macan, an Audi Q5–based crossover that slots into the lineup below the larger Cayenne. But judging by the reactions of women of a certain age to Porsche’s smallest ute, the Macan might just be the vehicular equivalent of wearing tight black pants in a hot room.<br />
<br />
The fawning isn’t surprising. Porsche’s newest SUV is a fairly irresistible redo of Audi’s architecture. Aside from the compact size, there is no obvious visual connection to the Q5. Porsche’s designers went to work inside and out, and though our test car lacked a leather-wrapped instrument panel, we didn’t miss it. Alcantara and leatherette seats are standard. Skip the pricey leather options—the basic interior is excellent. Puncturing the bodywork are massive front-end vents that flow enough air to cool a Class 8 truck. A black sticker on the bottom of the doors attempts to slim the visual weight.<br />
<br />
<br />
The actual weight for this Macan S is 4351 pounds. Moving that mass through all four wheels is a 3.0-liter V-6 armed with two turbochargers. Every Macan is turbocharged, even the S. The Macan Turbo’s larger, 3.6-liter engine makes 400 horsepower, while the S gets along with 340.<br />
<br />
Activate launch control and the Macan S will bolt to 60 in 4.6 seconds. That’s the same zero-to-60 time as a 1986 911 Turbo, the quickest car we tested that year.<br />
<br />
If you skip the launch protocol, the Macan S is slow to deliver the goods, like the 911 Turbo of yore. Meaningful thrust doesn’t arrive until 4000 rpm, which is apparent in the comparatively long 5-to-60 run of 6.0 seconds. Porsche’s dual-clutch seven-speed automatic shifts immediately, won’t prematurely upshift when your driving gets aggressive, and mechanically links the Macan to the rest of the Porsche family.<br />
<br />
No need for pricey interior options: the base-level cabin is excellent.<br />
The rest of the family might not recognize the Macan’s numb steering, though. From the Cayenne and Panamera through the sports cars, Porsche steering is typically sharp and replete with feel. Those traits skipped this Macan S, but the all-season tires might be to blame (summer tires are a no-cost option). The mild rubber certainly contributed to the weak 0.82 g of skidpad grip and the long 186-foot stops from 70 mph. On stickier rubber, a Macan Turbo managed 0.89 g on the pad and stopped from 70 in 150 feet.<br />
<br />
A mushy brake pedal might also get the Macan kicked out of the family reunion, and the slight fade is not in keeping with the bloodline.<br />
<br />
Options are another Porsche tradition, but our test Macan S wasn’t too extravagantly equipped. A base price of $50,895 swelled to $62,230 with the addition of an infotainment package, premium package, Sport Chrono package, Torque Vectoring Plus, and the adjustable air suspension. We could get by with an even more basic Macan, but what do we know? Porsche is having no trouble selling every Macan it can build. Here’s something we do know: If Porsche Design started making yoga pants, it wouldn’t be able to keep those on the shelves, either.

A new crossover gets us nearly as excited as the prospect of binge-watching C-SPAN. Or maybe binge-watching people who are binge-watching C-SPAN. Yet such vehicles are wildly popular, and so every automaker offers at least as many variations on the theme as there are variations of, well, C-SPAN. (“C-SPAN 7: All Senate Subcommittee on Surface Transportation and Merchant Marine Infrastructure, Safety, and Security, All the Time!”) This includes Mercedes-Benz, which is rebooting its compact-luxury entry with the new GLC-class.<br />
<br />
GLC, as in C-class<br />
The GLC replaces the GLK-class, the rename coming as part of Benz’s latest nomenclature strategy and intended to align it with the mechanically similar C-class sedan. As did the GLK, the GLC battles the Audi Q5, BMW X3, Lexus NX, Lincoln MKC, and Porsche Macan, among others. Unlike nearly all of its competitors, it can be ordered with rear-wheel drive, and 4MATIC all-wheel drive is available.<br />
<br />
We drove the new crossover in Switzer Germa France—also known as the Alsace region—in both GLC250 and GLC250d guises. When the GLC goes on sale in November, we won’t get the former in favor of the GLC300, which uses the same 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder but will have 30 more horsepower, for a total of 241. Which is good, since the GLC250 felt underpowered by exactly that much. A coincidence, that.<br />
<br />
The GLC250d has a diesel engine—the tip-off is its little ‘d’—and it will arrive here in late 2016 with GLC300d badging. (So it doesn’t feel inferior to the GLC300, we guess.) The diesel makes 201 horsepower and a robust 369 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are smooth and refined, although throttle response is lazy in the Mercedes way, and their power deliveries can best be described as “oozing.” Both of these GLCs, as well as their future American analogues, use a new, Mercedes-designed nine-speed automatic. It’s typically transparent in operation, although it did deliver a few harsh, almost clunking shifts in Sport+ mode when we matted the throttle coming out of slow, tight corners. To its credit, though, unlike other nine-speeds on the market, it has no problem actually using its highest ratio.<br />

As you may have surmised, the GLC drives like a C-class on stilts. The steering provides a confident sense of straight-ahead, and effort builds predictably when you turn the wheel. It’s essentially numb, but no one shopping a GLC will care. The structure is as rigid as rebar; we had a chance to briefly off-road the GLC—including rocking over deep ditches with diagonally opposite wheels in the air—and heard not one squeak or rattle.<br />

The optional AIRMATIC suspension, which was fitted to every GLC we drove, offers good body control, and its various modes are clearly delineated in terms of road feel. But as in the C-class, the Sport+ program can be too firm. This wasn’t an issue on Europe’s preternaturally smooth roads, but it will be problematic in places with gnarlier pavement; many Americans are likely to leave it in the default Comfort setting. If the standard steel-spring setup is as well tuned as the C-class’s, we’d pocket the money.<br />

Off the Block<br />
Applying Mercedes’ current design aesthetic to the crossover shape preserves much of what we like about the look—the soft radii and tension-building creases—while avoiding the drooping rear end common to the sedans, and the GLC gives off a sophisticated, expensive vibe. The designers lobbied to fit the GLC with large-diameter wheel-and-tire packages, and so 18-inch wheels are standard, and both 19s and gorgeous, AMG-labeled 20-inch multi spoke jobs are available. Compared with the blocky GLK, the more curvaceous GLC is fractionally taller, two inches wider, and nearly five inches longer overall.<br />

A spitting image of the C-class cabin we love so much, the GLC’s interior is a cut above anything else in the segment right now, and the materials, detailing, and finish all put the GLK’s to shame. The seats are supremely comfortable, and the interior is hushed even at autobahn speeds. So it’s a little bit surprising that the GLC300 will start at $39,875, just $1050 more than last year’s GLK, especially considering it adds a pile of standard equipment that includes a 7.0-inch infotainment screen with touch-pad writing surface, a power lift gate, push-button start, a power driver’s seat, and collision-mitigation tech, among other bits.<br />

Beyond that, the usual raft of luxury, convenience, and safety gadgets can be added, including but not limited to heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, a larger central screen, a head-up display, Burmester audio, radar cruise control, brake assist, rear-end collision prevention, active lane-keep assist, navigation, and adaptive LED headlamps.<br />
<br />
No full-bore, Mercedes-AMG GLC63 hellbeast is in the plans—which, who cares?—but a 362-hp GLC450 arrives next summer to butt heads with the 300-hp BMW X3 xDrive35i and the 354-hp Audi SQ5. There also will be a GLC350e plug-in hybrid using the same excellent system from the C350e; it likely will arrive as a 2018 model.<br />

The GLC isn’t as polarizing as the GLK, and it’s a huge advance in terms of desirability and both real and perceived quality. We might not be excited, but luxury-crossover buyers should be.<br />
